What Are Transits? How Planetary Movements Shape Your Life

Dipl.-Ing. René Koch

Your magazine horoscope says: “Great week for Taurus — career breakthrough ahead!” You’re a Taurus. And your actual week? Project failed, car in the shop, argument with your partner. What went wrong? The short answer: those horoscopes only look at your Sun sign. What actually matters are transits — the current planetary movements in relation to your unique birth chart. And that’s exactly what this article is about.

What Are Transits in Astrology?

When astrologers talk about transits, they mean the current positions of the planets in the sky and how they interact with the planetary positions in your birth chart. The term comes from the Latin transire — to pass through. Planets move through specific areas of the zodiac, forming angular relationships (aspects) to the points in your natal chart.

Think of your birth chart as a map. The planets at the moment of your birth hold fixed positions — like cities on a map. Transits are the weather system moving across that map. The cities stay where they are. But the weather keeps changing. Sometimes the sun shines on a particular region, sometimes a storm rolls through.

That’s exactly how transits work. When Jupiter passes over your natal Mars, it activates the energy of that point. When Saturn crosses your natal Sun, you feel it in an entirely different way. The quality depends on which planet is transiting, which point it touches, and what angle it forms.

The Difference: Birth Chart vs. Transits

Your Birth Chart — The Static Foundation

Your birth chart (radix or natal chart) is calculated once — for the exact moment of your birth, at your birthplace. It shows where the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto stood at that moment. This picture never changes. It is your astrological DNA.

If you’re interested in the fundamentals of birth-time analysis and personality mapping, it’s also worth looking at Human Design — a system that, like astrology, uses the moment of birth as its starting point.

Transits — The Dynamic Layer

Transits form the second layer. The planets keep moving after you’re born. Every day, every week, every year, they take on new positions. When a moving planet reaches a specific degree that resonates with a point in your birth chart, a transit occurs.

An example: your natal Sun sits at 15 degrees Capricorn. When transiting Saturn reaches 15 degrees Capricorn, it forms a conjunction to your Sun. That’s a Saturn transit over your Sun — a moment when Saturn’s themes (responsibility, structure, limitation) directly touch your core essence (Sun).

The key point: your birth chart tells you who you are. Transits tell you what’s currently on the table.

Why Magazine Horoscopes Don’t Work

Now it’s clear why the Taurus horoscope from the magazine missed the mark. These horoscopes are based solely on the Sun sign. Everyone born between April 20 and May 20 gets the same horoscope. That’s millions of people with completely different birth charts.

The astrologer writing the magazine horoscope looks at current transits only in relation to a single sign. They say: Jupiter is currently favorable for the sign of Taurus, so it’ll be a good week. But they don’t know the position of your Moon, your Ascendant, your Mars.

It’s as if a meteorologist said: “It’ll be warm in the north.” You live in the north — but on the coast, where a cold wind is blowing. The statement isn’t technically wrong, but it’s useless for your specific situation.

Personal transits, by contrast, look at your complete birth chart. Not just the Sun, but all ten planets, the Ascendant, the Midheaven, and the twelve houses. The difference is like comparing a weather report for an entire country to a forecast for your street.

Planetary Speed: From Hours to Decades

Not every transit carries the same weight. A core principle: the slower a planet moves, the deeper and more lasting its influence. The Moon races through a sign in two and a half days — its transits show up as brief mood shifts. Pluto takes up to 31 years for a single sign — its transits transform entire areas of your life.

Here’s the overview:

PlanetOrbital PeriodTransit Duration per Sign
Moon28 days2–3 days
Mercury88 daysapprox. 3 weeks
Venus225 daysapprox. 1 month
Mars2 yearsapprox. 2 months
Jupiter12 years1 year
Saturn29 years2.5 years
Uranus84 years7 years
Neptune165 years14 years
Pluto248 years12–31 years

The inner planets (Moon through Mars) produce short-term effects — daily moods, favorable time windows, minor challenges. They’re relevant for day-to-day planning and short time frames.

Mercury deserves a closer look: when it goes retrograde, communication mishaps and misunderstandings become more frequent. More on that in the article about Mercury retrograde — a transit that many people genuinely notice in their everyday lives.

The outer planets (Jupiter through Pluto) shape larger life chapters. A Jupiter transit lasts months, a Saturn transit can stretch over one to two years, and a Pluto transit may accompany you for years. These transits mark the truly significant phases: career changes, relationship upheavals, personal maturation processes.

The Three Most Important Transits at a Glance

Of all the planets, three have particularly noticeable effects on your life. They move slowly enough to trigger lasting change, yet fast enough to create clearly defined phases.

Jupiter Transits: Expansion and Opportunity

Jupiter takes twelve years for one full trip around the zodiac. Roughly once a year, it changes signs. When Jupiter passes over an important point in your chart, doors open. New opportunities emerge, confidence grows, things come together more easily than usual.

Jupiter transits are the phases when you can expand. Not “magical luck,” but favorable conditions. Like a tailwind when cycling — you still have to pedal, but you move faster. The Jupiter Return (when Jupiter returns to its birth position) happens every twelve years and often marks the beginning of a new growth cycle. At ages 12, 24, 36, 48 — and each time with a different theme.

Saturn Transits: Structure, Responsibility, and Maturation

Saturn is the most demanding teacher among the planets. Its transits challenge you to honestly confront what isn’t working. Where have you cut corners? Where is the foundation missing? Saturn shows you.

The most well-known Saturn transit is the Saturn Return — when Saturn returns to its birth position after about 29 years. It hits most people between ages 28 and 30 and marks the transition into true adulthood. Suddenly, the structures you built in your early twenties stop working. Relationships are questioned, career paths reconsidered, life blueprints reviewed. It can be exhausting, but it’s necessary. If you want to learn more about this formative phase, you’ll find a detailed analysis in the article about the Saturn transit.

The second Saturn Return arrives at 57–59, the third at 86–88. Each marks a maturation process on a different level.

Uranus Transits: Liberation and Sudden Change

Uranus is the unpredictable one. Its transits often strike like lightning — sudden, unexpected, carrying the message: this has to change. Uranus dissolves what has become rigid. Routines that no longer fit. Obligations that confine you. Beliefs that are outdated.

The famous Uranus opposition occurs around ages 40–42 (often known as the midlife crisis). Uranus then stands exactly opposite its birth position. Many people experience a strong urge for change during this phase — for freedom, for authenticity. Those who channel this energy constructively can fundamentally renew their lives. Those who suppress it often experience it as external upheavals — job loss, separation, relocation.

Using Transits Practically: Daily, Weekly, and Yearly Planning

Transits aren’t just a theoretical concept. They can be used for concrete planning. The question isn’t: “What’s going to happen to me?” It’s: “What is the quality of the current time — and how do I work with it?”

Daily Planning

For the daily rhythm, the fast-moving planets matter: Moon, Mercury, Venus. The Moon changes signs every two and a half days and colors the emotional baseline. Mercury influences communication and decision-making. Venus affects relationships and aesthetic sensibility.

In practical terms: on days when the Moon moves through your 10th house (career), professional engagement comes more easily. When Mercury forms a harmonious aspect to your natal Mercury, conversations and negotiations are favored.

Weekly Planning

At the weekly level, Mars transits and the aspects between the fast-moving planets come into play. Mars provides energy and drive — but also conflict potential. A week in which Mars forms a tension aspect to your Saturn is not ideal for risky ventures. Better: work through things in a structured way and practice patience.

Yearly Planning

At the yearly level, Jupiter and Saturn are the main players. Where does Jupiter stand this year in relation to your chart? That’s the area where growth is possible. Where does Saturn stand? That’s where things are being tested and consolidated. Knowing these two cycles gives you a clear framework for the entire year. You know when to step on the gas and when it’s time to lay foundations.

Why Personal Transits Are Fundamentally Different from Mass Horoscopes

This point can’t be emphasized enough, because it makes the central difference. A general horoscope says: “Jupiter in Taurus brings financial opportunities for Taurus natives.” A personal transit report says: “Jupiter at 17 degrees Taurus forms a trine to your natal Mars at 17 degrees Virgo in the 6th house. Concretely: your work situation gets a tailwind. Projects you tackle have good chances. Time window: March to May.”

The difference is like comparing a weather forecast for all of Europe to the rain radar for your city. Both have their place. But if you want to know whether you’ll need an umbrella tomorrow, only the latter helps.

Personal transit analyses take into account:

  • All the planets in your birth chart, not just the Sun
  • The houses, which show in which area of life the transit is active
  • The aspects, which determine the quality of the transit (harmonious, tense, neutral)
  • The duration, based on the exact degree and the speed of the transiting planet
  • Overlaps, when multiple transits simultaneously affect the same area

It’s precisely the overlaps that make the difference. When Jupiter and Saturn both activate your 7th house (partnerships) at the same time, a more complex dynamic emerges than with a single transit. Jupiter wants to expand, Saturn wants to solidify — and this tension often describes reality more accurately than a single sentence from a magazine horoscope.

Transits and Cosmic Timing: The Bigger Picture

In astrology, there’s a concept called cosmic timing (German: Zeitqualität). It means that every moment carries a specific signature — shaped by the current constellation of all the planets. Transits are the tool that lets you relate this cosmic timing to your personal chart.

This isn’t about predictions in the sense of: “On Tuesday, X will happen to you.” It’s about probabilities and tendencies. A Saturn transit over your natal Sun won’t automatically make you sick or cost you your job. But it will put themes around responsibility, limitation, and honesty with yourself on the table. How you deal with them is up to you.

This approach fundamentally differs from what many people understand as a “horoscope.” It’s not about fate. It’s about awareness of the current currents — and the ability to navigate them consciously. At its core, it’s like a weather report: you can’t change the weather, but you can prepare for it appropriately.

How to Get Started with Your Personal Transits

If you’ve only read magazine horoscopes until now and you’re curious: the first step is to have your complete birth chart calculated. You need three pieces of information: date of birth, exact time of birth, and place of birth. The more precise the time, the more accurate the analysis. Even a 15-minute deviation can shift the Ascendant and thereby change the entire house distribution.

The second step: look at where the slow-moving planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) currently stand — and whether they form aspects to your natal planets. That gives you the broad strokes. The fast-moving planets then fill in the details.

It sounds complex, and honestly: it is. The calculation is pure astronomy — exact natural science. The interpretation requires experience and context. But the core principle — slow planets for the big themes, fast planets for the fine-tuning — is something you can put to use immediately.
