What Is Human Design?

Human Design is a precise system for self-knowledge developed by Ra Uru Hu in 1987. It combines ancient wisdom from four distinct traditions:

Astrology (planetary positions at your birth - learn more in What Are Transits?)
I Ching (The Chinese Book of Changes - 64 hexagrams)
Kabbalah (The Tree of Life with its 10 centers)
Chakra System (energy centers in the body)

What makes it special: Human Design is astronomically precise. Your chart is based on exact planetary positions at the moment of your birth - calculated to an accuracy of 0.005°.

Why Human Design?

As a software engineer, I’m fascinated by the precision of this system. While many spiritual approaches remain vague, Human Design delivers concrete, verifiable data:

Scientifically calculable - Based on astronomical data (Swiss Ephemeris)
Individual - No two charts are the same (except for twins)
Practical - Concrete guidance for your daily life
Holistic - Reveals your strengths, potentials, and challenges

The Basics: Your Bodygraph

Your Bodygraph is the graphical representation of your Human Design. It shows:

1. Type (5 Main Types)

Generator (~70%) - Consistent energy, built for sustained work
Manifestor (~9%) - The initiator
Projector (~20%) - The guide
Reflector (~1%) - The mirror
Manifesting Generator - A hybrid of Generator & Manifestor

2. Authority

Your inner decision-making mechanism. How do you make correct decisions?

Emotional Authority
Sacral Authority
Splenic Authority
Ego Authority
Self-Projected Authority
Mental Projector (no inner authority)
Lunar Authority (Reflectors only)

3. Profile

Your life theme - represented by two numbers (e.g., 3/5, 1/3, 6/2).

4. Defined vs. Open Centers

Defined (colored) = Consistent energy, reliable traits
Open (white) = Receptive, potentially wise, but susceptible to conditioning

The 26 Gate Activations

This is where it gets truly precise: Your chart has 26 activated Gates:

13 Conscious (Personality) - What you consciously perceive
13 Unconscious (Design) - What others see in you

Each Gate has additional layers:

Line (1-6) - Your mode of expression
Color (1-6) - Your motivation style
Tone (1-6) - Your perception
Base (1-5) - Your deepest level

Most readings stop at the Gate and Line. The deeper layers add considerable nuance.

Variables: The 4 Arrows

The Variables (also called the “4 Arrows”) show:

PHS (Primary Health System) - How you eat optimally
Environment - Where you thrive best for living and working
Perspective - How you perceive the world
Motivation - What drives you

This is the deeper layer of Human Design. It gets specific. Variables add depth that most readings skip. They’re worth understanding.

Human Design vs. Other Systems

Compared to other self-knowledge systems, Human Design stands out in precision and individuality. Astrology comes close in both, but offers less direct practical guidance. The Enneagram is strong on practicality but less individually precise. MBTI is accessible but limited in depth and personalization.

Your birth time is critical. A difference of just 4 minutes can:
